Diabetes can lead to lower limb amputations because of damage to the nerves and blood vessels that serve the limbs. But this amputation is actually ‘unnecessary’ as too few were getting the right foot care, a study by Wolverhampton-based researchers claimed.

UK’s second most common cause of lower limb amputation is diabetes. And even up to 70% of people die within five years of having an amputation, data published by Diabetes UK shows. People can be put at high risk of amputation by history of ulcers, nerve damage, circulation problems and foot deformities. But no specialist care is being offered to more than a quarter of those thought to be at high risk of amputation, the Wolverhampton study suggested.
