The U.S. Food and Drug Administration had accepted the oral therapy Galvus of Novartis for people with Type 2 diabetes for standard review, the Swiss drug firm said on Thursday. That Galvus was on track for approval in Europe to be completed later in 2006, Novartis said in a statement. Part of a highly-competitive segment of oral treatments for Type 2 diabetes, Galvus works by enhancing the body’s own ability to lower blood sugar. And that have the potential to generate billions of dollars in sales. Analysts at Bank Leu said, "Competition in this sector is red hot… Up until shortly, it was believed that Novartis would be ahead of Merck by roughly six months while now the companies look to deliver themselves a neck-and-neck race."
