Though EU countries are on with all its efforts to tackle the growing diabetes epidemic, Ireland has disappointingly fallen behind, according to a major new report. Ireland, among all the 14 EU member states, has no strategy in place for tackling what can be a killer disease. It has been revealed by a report by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) European Region and the Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND).

Ireland has no comprehensive national prevention, screening and treatment programs, unlike the countries such as the UK and Finland, the report shows. Ireland was due to have a diabetes strategy in place around late 2005 or early 2006, but we still do not have any sign of a strategy being put in place, the audit of diabetes policies in the 25 EU states reports.
