Bad news for diabetics particularly if you live in Britain, if the report from the charity Diabetes UK is to be believed which states that as many as 1.76 million Britons with diabetes will succumb to fatal heart diseases. These findings are based on the assessment that was done after analyzing that how well diabetics manage their cardiovascular risk factor.

It is estimated that in U.K. only about 50 per cent of diabetes patients are aware of the fact that their disease can kill them if they fail to keep it under control. This awareness index is dismally low amongst total U.K population, as only 28 per of them know that in most of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes is the prime cause. This lack of awareness causes high probability that U.K’s diabetes patients will be caught completely off guard.

Charity Diabetes UK said:

Many diabetics are failing to reach recommended target levels for blood pressure and cholesterol. As a result, 80 per cent of the 2.2 million diabetics in Britain were likely to die from cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The need of the hour is to make people aware of the fact that there is a great link between diabetes and heart diseases and diabetics always carry a high risk of developing cardiovascular problems.

Simon O’Neill, director of care, information and advocacy services at Diabetes UK, said:

This is a national emergency as half of the people who are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes already show signs of cardiovascular disease at the time of diagnosis.

Diabetes UK is also recommending for total cholesterol blood levels of less than four millimoles per litre for people with diabetes to lower the risk factor.
