Lithotripsy linked to diabetes

Small stones often pass in the urine, some will require alternative treatment, such as shock wave Lithotripsy. This treatment uses sonic waves to break up kidney stones into tiny pieces so that they can be passed naturally through the system. The research team, based at the Mayo Clinic in the US, found that 19 years later those who had received the shock wave treatment were almost four times more likely to develop diabetes. Furthermore if both kidneys were treated, the patients were also significantly more at risk of having high blood pressure. The suggested reason is that the damage to the tissue of the pancreas could put patients at risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.
