Number of diabetics with kidney failure rising: report

Diabetics have always been considered at higher risk of kidney failure. But more confounding is the fact that between the time periods of 1995 to 2004, the number of diabetics with end-stage kidney failure have almost doubled. This startling fact crept out through a report released on Wednesday. The same report further stated that the number of new cases of kidney failure jumped 114 per cent, from just under 1,100 in the first year to more than 2,100 cases in 2004. Unfortunately, in the same period a boom in type 2 diabetes cases have also been registered. Expressing deep concern on this issue Margaret Keresteci, CIHI’s manager of clinical registries remarked: Diabetes is the fastest growing cause of end-stage renal disease… Diabetes is now a factor in more than 40 per cent of all registered patients with end-stage renal disease, up from 25 per cent a decade ago. This revelation is terrifying as this report states that diabetics are more vulnerable to renal disease, which is quite a grim health problem. More obfuscating is the fact that in the recent years more and more people have been beleaguered by diabetes, which indicates that they are now more exposed to renal disease or kidney failure. Besides, there are many other harmful complications that come flocking with diabetes. Therefore, where people should move on with a healthy eating habit and lifestyle, at the same time further studies, aiming at better solution to diabetes, should also be carried out.
