A recent study has revealed that passive smokers are more vulnerable to diabetes than the smokers. The study was divided between current smokers, former smokers, non-smokers who were exposed to second-hand smoke and non-smokers who were not exposed to second-hand smoke, analysing the level of glucose intolerance over a period of 15 years. The result showed that the non-smokers who were exposed to second-hand smoke were at a 14 percent risk of developing diabetes than the non-smokers who were not exposed to second-hand smoke. As per the researchers: Those breathing second-hand smoke are exposed to many toxins. And the chemical reactions which produce second-hand smoke mean that some of those toxins may be at even higher concentrations than the levels breathed in directly by smokers. If one of these toxins particularly affects the pancreas – the organ which produces insulin-this may explain the findings. It is not a new study that passive smoking increases the risk of diabetes, but the study confirms that you don’t have to sit in the company of smokers.
